I’m thinking about going out of my way to put softer springs/shocks on my car.

I have a 2nd gen Volvo S40 T5 (turbo) with over 250k on it. I’m the second owner, first one took very good care of it.

Being the turbo model, it has stiffer sport suspension. However, it’s an automatic turbo car with over 250k miles on it, so I don’t really drive it that hard because I need the turbo and engine to last at least a few more years. Plus even with the upgraded suspension and engine, it’s still not the kind of car I like to drive hard. I just like the smooth and strong power for hectic city and interstate driving.

One of the rear shocks is bad, and I figured if I could find a good deal on the comfort springs and shocks, just replace everything.

I just wanted to ask if any of y’all have gotten a chance to compare the comfort/sport springs for the Volvo and if it’d be worth the trouble.

Again, it’s not like I strongly dislike the sport suspension. It’s just it needs some suspension work and it’s one of those “Might well while I’m at it” kind of things.

I wonder if the the regular S40 suspension pieces would just bolt in and do what you want without replacing a bunch of stuff. Might be worth calling ipd on Monday or sending them an email.

You can probably change the rear shocks without even removing the rear wheels (I know for sure you can in a C30). It’s two 10mm bolts and the bolt on the bottom of the shock. I would replace the rear shocks and see what you think. You might not even need different springs.

I’m sure they would. On Volvo’s own website it doesn’t differentiate between engines, just between comfort/dynamic/sport. When I said everything, I just meant all the springs and shocks. Since I only *need* to replace 2 shocks.

Good idea, I’ll probably just do that for now and see how I like it. One thing I just thought about is the front is a strut design. So I’d either have to get a quick strut, or fuck around rebuilding the strut assemblies which will mean either significantly more time or money.

I guess it depends though. If I could find a complete OEM strut used on a forum it probably wouldn’t be too much money.

Get the Koni FSD kit, if you can afford it. About $600, sold as the set of 4. Amazon has the best price. There’s a $50 rebate until the end of the month 5/31

You may also be able to use smaller wheels and higher-profile tires from the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus. This will also give you a better ride.

I’m of no help, but my wife had one of those with the same engine, but a 6 speed manual. We loved it, and miss it. But kids and dogs caused us to move into Wagon Lyfe, Yo. But V50!! Even more rare than the manual S40, sadly.

I don’t think I’d mind the stiff suspension at all with a manual. But with the automatic the suspension just seems out of place.

The struts are simple too. It’s a little more time consuming simply because there are more bolts, but it’s very straightforward. I just put new koni str.ts in mine and it was about $150. Looks like stock struts are about $85 each and you will want to replace the strut mounts which is another $30 or so. It’s definitely a job you can do in an afternoon with a lug wrench, 10, 14, 15mm sockets, spring compressor, offset 17mm wrench some PB Blaster and a mallet. Even easier with an impact wrench.
